Say It in the Subject Line: A Small Change That Makes a Big Impact

Since launching our Internal Communication Guidelines in mid-September, we’ve had pockets of progress—but overall adoption has been slower than expected.

To help build momentum, we’re starting with one of the simplest and most powerful tools: the subject line.

A clear subject line sets the tone, defines the ask, and helps your colleagues prioritize their response. It’s not just a label—it’s a headline!

The guidelines recommend using subject lines that include the actiontopic, and due date. For example: Action Needed: RF 6110 TDS Sheet Review – Due 11/15/25 5pm CT.

This format eliminates guesswork and makes expectations unmistakable. And remember: “URGENT” should only be used when the business impact is clearly explained in the body of the email.

To make this habit stick, try one of these catchy reminders – let People Services know which one you like best:

Ask + Date = GREAT
Need + Date = Communicate
Need it fast? Add the ask
Need it? Name it. Want it? Date it.

It’s a small shift that can transform how we work together—making communication faster, clearer, and more respectful.

Stay tuned as we continue to break down the guidelines into bite-sized practices that build our ONE COMPANY culture.
