Spring Cleaning – Maintaining a Clean Workplace

Sweep away the winter blues with a spring clean! Keeping an organized and clean workplace is an essential part of workplace safety. It also improves productivity, increases employee morale and helps create a more pleasant and safer working environment.

How to Start

  • Organize your work station
    • Declutter! – Cluttered Workspace = Cluttered Mind
    • Get rid of unnecessary items
    • Put things aways – only keep items out that are used daily
  • Organize your digital workspace
    • Delete unnecessary emails or files
    • Save important documents
    • Organize content by folders
    • Avoid dumping everything in one folder

2/3 of all incidents involve housekeeping in some way, shape or form. By adopting a few good housekeeping habits, you can help reduce the risk of injury, maintain the working area free of hazards, and perform more effectively.

Good Housekeeping Habits

  • Clean as you go
  • Keep  doorways, walkways and aisles clear
  • Maintain walking surfaces clean and dry
  • Return tools, supplies and any unused items to storage area
  • Regularly inspect and repair tools and equipment to ensure they are in good working condition
  • Ensure cabinets and drawers are closed when not in use
  • Properly dispose of any trash or debris
  • Clean-up spills immediately
    • Report any chemical spills
  • Report any unsafe conditions or hazards immediately
  • Avoid “panic” cleanups
    • Effective housekeeping is an ongoing operation

Use inspection checklists like EHS-4001A, to identify hazards and mark areas of concern, as part of ongoing procedures to maintain an organized and safe workplace. Please reach out to your lead, supervisor, manager or EH&S for any questions.
