Safety Note: Preparing for Autumn

The fall season is often a transitional period that brings a unique combination of risks — from weather changes that introduce hazards like rain and ice to increased workloads driven by the upcoming holidays and potential staffing shortages. Each of these factors presents specific challenges that require a proactive approach to prevent incidents.

Risks to Look Out For During the Fall Season
  • Slips, trips and falls - Potential wetness from rain can create slipping hazards, and debris from fallen leaves or strong winds can add build up along pathways and doorways.
  • Reduced daylight – 50-70 minutes of daylight are lost during the month of October, which means we may increase our time of driving in the dark and working under artificial light.
  • Increased workload and stress – With the holidays and end of the year approaching, there is often increased pressure to meet deadlines and make rushed decisions.
  • Varying weather – In many parts of the country and around the world, fall days can bring three seasons in one, making it difficult to prepare for all conditions.
How to Mitigate Risks
  • Good Housekeeping
    • Remove debris from walkways and frequently used paths
    • Help keep common areas clean
    • Clean-up spills immediately; report them when necessary
    • Use “Wet Floor” or other warning signs to alert others of wet areas
  • Increased Awareness
    • Remind employees to be mindful of their surroundings
    • Avoid distractions while walking or driving
    • Ensure good lighting to prevent trips and falls
  • Plan Accordingly
    • Categorize tasks by urgency and importance, if possible, to help manage workloads
    • Communicate clearly and often, especially if experiencing staffing shortages
    • Avoid multitasking, which can be counterproductive and lead to taking shortcuts
    • Provide clear direction when assigning new tasks or hiring temporary employees
    • Prepare for unexpected weather by carrying extra layers, such as a rain jacket and umbrella
