Safety Note: Preventing Back Injuries

This month, we’re continuing our focus on creating a safer workplace for everyone. Each safety note is an opportunity to pause, reflect, and strengthen our awareness of the behaviors and practices that keep ourselves and our colleagues protected. By staying alert, following our procedures, and speaking up when something doesn’t feel right, we all play a key role in maintaining a safe and healthy workplace environment.

Back Safety & Strain-Related Injuries

Back injuries are one of the most common injuries in our workplace and a leading cause of missed workdays. By understanding what causes back strain in our daily tasks and recognizing early warning signs, we can take action to prevent injuries before they become serious.

Common Causes of Back Strain

  • Twisting while carrying loads

  • Improper lifting

  • Sudden or repetitive movements

  • Carrying uneven loads

Warning Signs of a Strain Injury

  • Stiffness or reduced flexibility

  • Discomfort while bending or lifting

  • Persistent lower back pain

Following Safe Lifting Techniques, as well as other safe work practices, can help minimize and prevent back and strain-related injuries.

Prior to Lifting

  • Size the load

  • Plan your route

  • Ask for help if needed

Safe Lifting Techniques

  • Stand close to the load

  • Bend at the knees, not waist

  • Keep back straight

  • Lift with your legs

  • Avoid twisting or turning with your feet

Use dollies, carts, and forklifts when available to facilitate the movement of loads. Alternate tasks, when possible, and reports hazards early.

In case of a strain or back related injury:

  • Stop the activity

  • Report to your manager or supervisor immediately

  • Do not “work through” the pain
